Parent and Student Information
When can my student start Driver's Education (Segment 1)?
Students may start Segment 1 of Driver's Education at 14 years and 8 months of age. They will be eligible for their Level 1 license (permit) after they have completed segment 1 and are 14 years and 9 months of age.
What does Segment 1 consist of ?
Segment 1 is the entire drivers education course that a student under 18 years of age needs to take in order to receive their level 1 license (learners permit). The class consists of 24 hours in a classroom and 6 hours of driving.
After completing Segment 1 will my student have his or her permit (Level 1 License)?
Your student will be issued a Segment 1 completion certificate (green) upon passing our class which allows them to get a Level 1 License (permit) at the Secretary of State's office. You will need to accompany your student to Secretary of State for them to receive this permit.
When can my student start Segment 2?
Most students elect to take Segment 2 in the month or two before their 16th birthday or road test, but Segment 2 can be taken anytime after students have a minimum of 90 days on their level 1 license. Students must also have completed a minimum of 30 hours (out of 50 total) driving with their parents or responsible adult.

How do I pay for Drivers Education at Excel Driving School?
We accept cash, personal check, money orders and Visa / Master card.
For Segment 1 classes, at least $100 of your student's tuition is due the first day of class. The remainder can be paid at anytime during the class, but payment must be made in full before a Segment 1 completion certificate will be issued. All payments made after the first day of class must be made in cash or credit card.
Segment 2 classes must be paid in full ($40) the first day of class.
What happens if my student misses a day of class?
In order for a student to receive their completion certificate they must attend 24 hours of class time and finish their driving lessons. If your student misses a day of class they may attend one of our other locations or one of our next classes to make up the missed time.
When will my student begin their driving lessons?
Our instructors begin driving lessons on the first week of class. We start with the oldest students in the class working our way down the list to the youngest. Your student will sign up for their lessons depending on their availability. Lessons do not take place during classroom time. On occasion, driving lessons will continue for a few weeks after classroom sessions are completed.
Are there restrictions when driving with a Level 1, Level 2 or Level 3 license?
Yes. The Level 1 Learner's License allows a young driver to operate a motor vehicle only when accompanied by either a licensed parent or licensed legal guardian, or a licensed driver over age 21 who has been designated by the parent or legal guardian.
A Level 2 Intermediate License allows teens to drive without supervision except from midnight to 5 a.m. Driving is only permitted from midnight to 5 a.m. if driving to and from employment or if driving with a parent, legal guardian or designated licensed driver over the age of 21.
A Level 3 Full License grants full driving privileges with no restrictions.
Are there penalties for violating these restrictions?
Yes. A conviction for violating restrictions may delay your eligibility to advance to Level 2 or Level 3. In addition, a conviction will probably result in a suspension of your license for a period of time.
Does the graduated license replace Michigan's probationary system for new drivers?
No. In fact, graduated licensing complements the probationary program to create a stronger program. Probation begins whenever a new driver receives an original license. Probation lasts for three years and until the driver has been violation and crash-free for the last 10 months of the probation period.
In addition to the requirements established by the graduated driver license program, drivers are also subject to the probationary license requirements. Both programs may result in an extension of probation or delayed advancement to the next licensing level.
